NWGIS Announces Ad-Hoc Grant Policy

Thu, 03/02/2017 - 3:01pm -- bbutterfield

From time to time, the Northwest GIS User Group (NWGIS) has received small grant requests. The NWGIS Board of Directors has a goal of maintaining a minimum amount in its bank account to cover ongoing and unexpected expenses. However, when there are sufficient funds, NWGIS will consider requests for small grants that further GIS research, education, technology and other GIS related activities. When the NWGIS bank account balance drops below a certain level, then all grant requests will be suspended until the balance increases. Initially, there will not be a formal proposal format.

For more information, see the full NWGIS Ad-Hoc Grant Policy.

NWGIS 2017 Save The Date

Fri, 10/28/2016 - 12:11pm -- bbutterfield

We will offer a broad slate of preconference workshops and we will have informative and entertaining speakers. As usual, the concurrent sessions at the 2017 NWGIS will provide a great opportunity to see and hear about projects and work being done by your fellow GIS professionals from across the Pacific Northwest. Then there is the time to just chat, meet new people, and catch up with past colleagues. Conference planning has already started and we want your ideas, suggestions, and other input. Use the Contact Us link at https://www.nwgis.org/contact to send an email to the conference planning committee.

The Boise Convention Center (https://boisecentre.com) is newly expanded and remodeled and is located in downtown Boise. It will be a great venue for our event, and is close to restaurants, galleries, museums and the Boise River. Our warm days and cool evening early fall days should be perfect for enjoying Boise's vibrant downtown. Mark your calendars now and we will see you next fall.

The Winner of the 2016 NWGIS Teaching Grant is….

Mon, 06/13/2016 - 10:32am -- bbutterfield
Thank you to all of the parties who submitted applications for the inaugural 2016 NWGIS teaching grant!  The grant applications covered a wide-range of topics and it was very interesting to learn more about what our teachers and professors are exploring with GIS and geography.

Congratulations to our winners - Professors John Ritter and Jack Walker from the Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT)!  The professors will receive $5,000 for the purpose of acquiring UAS software from Pix4d.  The software will be used by the professors to process imagery for classroom demonstrations, exercises, and projects for the GIS classes they teach at OIT.  This software acquisition is expected to impact up to 240 students with various majors including GIS/geomatics, environmental science, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and renewable energy.

Please join us in congratulating the professors at the NWGIS User Group Meetup event at the 2016 ESRI Conference!

Northwest GIS User Group – GIS Teaching Grant 2016

Background

One of the goals of the Northwest (NW) GIS User Group is to foster and support GIS education in our region. Due to the financial success of the past several Northwest GIS conferences that we have hosted, our organization can now offer, on a one year pilot basis, a GIS teaching grant of up to $5,000.

The purpose of the grant: Provide a GIS educator with funds to pursue limited research or to provide a unique training experience for one of their courses. At this time, since this grant proposal is a one‐year trial, we are receptive as to the type of funding requests that we receive.

We will evaluate each grant request using the following non‐ranked criteria:

  • Number of GIS students that are impacted
  • Length of time; Is this a one year opportunity or an ongoing effort
  • Is the NW GIS grant request part of a collaborative funding request
  • Amount of funding requested
  • Sustainability over time
