Know the Mission

Our mission centers around serving GIS users. As a board member, you should be passionate about helping the GIS community thrive.

Time Commitment

Board terms last four years, allowing ample time to learn, contribute, and lead.

  • Monthly Meeting: First Thursday of each month at 1:00 PM Pacific / 2:00 PM Mountain.
  • Average Monthly Involvement: 4–8 hours.
  • Peak Commitments: Up to 20 hours/month if involved in conference planning or committee leadership.

Board Culture

We are a working board, meaning members actively participate in both strategic planning and hands-on operations such as:

  • Conference planning
  • Committee leadership
  • Website and content management

If you're looking for a passive role, this may not be the right fit. However, if you're ready to roll up your sleeves and contribute, you’ll find a collaborative, respectful, and mission-driven environment. Meetings are productive and informal, with open and transparent communication.

Responsibilities

As a nonprofit board member, you take on legal and fiduciary duties. These include:

  • Strategic oversight
  • Financial stewardship
  • Ethical governance

You’re not just a volunteer — you’re a steward of an organization that serves a broad GIS community.

Desired Skills

We welcome a wide range of skills, including:

  • Finance and budgeting
  • Legal and compliance
  • Fundraising and development
  • Conference and event planning
  • Communications and outreach

Your unique background, interests, and energy help NWGIS succeed.
